The Final Curtain
The Final Curtain

St Davids 10 Aberaeron 38
The curtain finally fell on the Seagulls’ season with this comprehensive success against St Davids. Originally scheduled for early January, this rearranged encounter proved to be a frustrating affair as the visitors struggled to overcome a dour home defence, very often treading a fine offside line. A considerable gale meant a game of two halves, with Aberaeron facing the elements in the first period and despite subjecting the hosts to considerable pressure found the final pass very elusive and the scoreline remained intact until the final minutes when pressure finally told, the benefactor being lock Leighton Daniel, taking a deft inside pass from Alex Danton to cross in the corner. Most of the half had seen Aberaeron go close to putting pressure into points but in the end they had to be satisfied with the single score before the turnaround. The early part of the second session proved much the same, and it took a concerted effort to widen the advantage. Scrum half Dylan Williams was first off the mark making the most of the forwards’ efforts and wing Rhodri Severs was quick to add the second to put clear daylight between the sides. The Saints then enjoyed their best period of the game as they put their own points on the board with a double strike from deep within their own territory to reduce the deficit and create a glimmer of hope. However the much hoped for fightback never materialised as outside half Dylan Evans restored the advantage, with a brace of converted tries, his strength enough to beat the cover defence and from that point on it was a case of the margin of victory at the final whistle. As it was Aberaeron had to settle for a single additional score, prop Carwyn Davies popping up on the unaccustomed position on the wing for his first score of the season. The additional conversion from Evans gave the final scoreline a realistic look and the final whistle signalled the end of a very mixed season where much expectation and ambition has been frustratingly thwarted with inconsistency. Nevertheless the introduction of several new faces during the campaign has proved a major plus point and so once again we look forward to the next campaign with much expectation and hope that promise finally transpires into success and promotion to a higher level.
