Aberaeron 34 Fishguard 14
Meeting for the third time this season, Aberaeron duly completed a cleansweep with this emphatic win over Fishguard. The previous two games had been very close affairs, but the result of this encounter was never in doubt as the hosts controlled matters from the first kick, with Fishguard rarely threatening to build on their midweek success at Milford. Returning personnel meant Aberaeron were arguably at their strongest for a long time and the visitors line was breached on six occasions to gain maximum points on the day. The first came early in the first half with lock Nathan Best benefitting from considerable pressure deep in Fishguard territory, ripping the ball from flanker Adam Jones to go over the line. Another came the way of Llyr Davies, returning after a lengthy period on the sidelines, and the first half scoring was completed with a brace of conversions and a penalty from centre Dylan Evans, another of the long term absentees. The strong gale at Parc Drefach could have meant a tale of two halves, but having faced the wind in the first period, the visitors would have been disappointed without any real threat to the home advantage. They did reduce the deficit to give a glimmer of hope following a defensive error in the home ranks, but were immediately pegged back as outside half Davies took the final pass from lively hooker Rhydian Harries to cross for his second. Despite another lapse in defence, Aberaeron were in no mood to surrender the spoils and captain Tudur Jenkins took advantage of real pressure from man of the match Neil Snowdon to put the result safe after another period of concerted pressure. The scoring was completed minutes from the end as Harries duly got his reward with the sixth try of the afternoon, and Fishguard’s woe was completed with a red card for over aggression. The performance on the day was arguably the best of the campaign and again it is a case of what might have been with inconsistency and injuries ruining any chances of climbing the ladder . Two games remain and Aberaeron will be eager to finish on a high, the next being an interesting encounter at St Clears on Saturday.
