Swansea Uplands 0 Aberaeron 34
A rearranged encounter on a Friday night deep in the Swansea valley has definite banana skin potential, but a competent and assured display from Aberaeron at the Uplands ensured a pleasant journey home. The hosts are not enjoying the best of seasons and despite an energetic and sometimes abrasive approach, the skill and technique displayed by the visitors overcame any risk of an upset and the final result was never really in doubt. Aberaeron displayed their intentions from the kick off, the front eight building on their growing reputation with the Uplands unable to combat the strength in the set pieces with little answer to the rolling mauls. Credit must go to the front row trio of Alex Danton, Rhydian Harries and Owen Wozencroft, the latter’s considerable strength continually driving the home side back especially in loose play. It was of little surprise that tries came in the early period and it was flanker Adam Jones(pictured) who was to benefit with a brace in the first quarter. By the break Aberaeron had opened up a comfortable advantage with a first of the season for second row Leighton Daniel , paired on the night with veteran Sion Aron, whose performance belied his ageing years. Not wanting to be outdone, the visitors backline was eager to spread the ball at every opportunity but desperate defence kept the home line intact on more than one occasion. The reward for their endeavour finally came mid way into the second half when centre Owain Williams capped a fine display in finishing off a move reminiscent of the old days, and with the floodgates starting to open, Neil Snowdon went over for his fourth of the season. There was the odd foray from the home side but comfortable defence kept the attacks at bay, Rhodri Severs on more than one occasion making crucial tackles. Aberaeron’s final score came curtsey of the referee, the Uplands transgressing on their own line giving away a penalty try with Snowdon on the point of adding his second of the night and with Carl Williams adding a couple of conversions it was a job well done and a pleasant trip home. With a busy schedule ahead to the end of the season this was very much a boost to morale following recent setbacks and Aberaeron will be keen to build on the success with Llangwm being the visitors to Parc Drefach on Saturday.
