Aberaeron 3 Llangefni 11

Aberaeron’s dream of further progress in the plate competition of the Swalec cup came to an abrupt end in a match dominated by a strong gale at Parc Drefach. In a real tale of two halves, the ball hardly left the north end of the patch with Llangefni’s advantage in the first period carrying the day. The visitors elected to play with the wind advantage in the first period, but a stout rearguard display by the hosts restricted the North Wales side to a solitary penalty advantage until minutes from the break when an unconverted try and further penalty proved crucial at the final whistle. It was a busy afternoon for the home pack with captain Tudur Jenkins having to rally his troops, with sterling displays from Neil Snowdon and Alistair Severs. Scoring chances in the first period were at a premium with Llangefni’s back division bereft of any real threat, and they were forced to depend on a solid display from their front eight who gave the home forwards an uncomfortable afternoon. After the break, it was Aberaeron’s turn to dominate but the ball failed to flow along the backline and Llangefni were content to soak up the pressure and relying on the odd breakaway to relieve the onslaught. Aberaeron’s points came from the boot of outside half Llyr Davies, and the same player was narrowly wide with a couple more efforts. Centre Dylan Evans was also agonisingly close with attempts at the posts, one effort coming back off the upright to safety where the odd millimetre to one side would have subjected the visitors to a nervy final few minutes. It was however not to be and Llangefni now progress to the next round of the competition with Aberaeron relegated to the Bowl competition . The performance however will raise confidence with a Pembrokeshire cup encounter at Aberystwyth next on the agenda on Thursday evening.
