Aberaeron 19 Pontyates 0
Despite the success, celebration was somewhat subdued at Parc Drefach on Saturday night. With expectation high after a determined performance in the cup the previous week, a bonus point win was very much on the cards, but in the end the Seagulls fell tantalisingly short of the target, and had to settle for a comfortable win. Pontyates may be near the foot of the table, and although devoid of any flair or attacking ideas, dour defence and customary irritable tactics prevented the hosts from running out far more comfortable winners. A flurry of yellow cards mostly unnecessary also contributed to the many interruptions in play and the game in the end drifted into a frustrating finale. The home forwards again competed well despite losing hooker Rhydian Harries in the early minutes, but deputy Carwyn Davies never took a back foot and led from the front by captain Tudur Jenkins(pictured), the only concern was the lack of points at the half hour stage. Reward came belatedly through the frame of Neil Snowdon after a concerted assault on the visitors line, minutes after Aled Davies seemed to have a perfect score disallowed. Aberaeron then moved into the comfort zone with Jenkins cutting through from midfield to outpace the cover defence, allowing Llyr Davies a simple conversion. The backline had to be reshuffled after the break, Dan Forbes suffering a tweak of the hamstring, with Davies also leaving the fray, but Tom Taylor belying his young years never lost vision of the ultimate goal, and Pontyates spent much of the second period defending their own line. They were successful to a certain extent but the line was finally breached after the referee lost patience with the numerous infringements by the visitors resulting in a penalty try being awarded. With time running out a late opportunity came the way of Dafydd Roberts, but the pacy wing just failed to ground the ball, which signalled the end of the chase for the elusive bonus point. Whilst welcoming a deserved success, the lack of clinical finishing is adding to the frustration as the season progresses. Next on the agenda is an interesting encounter against Llangefni in the Welsh Cup Plate competition on Saturday week, where they will be able to test their resolve and progress made thus far.
