Aberaeron 46 Pontyates 10
Aberaeron comfortably disposed of Pontyates in this rearranged encounter on Wednesday evening at Parc Drefach. Having failed to raise a side the previous Saturday, the visitors at least managed to get fifteen on to the pitch, albeit with uncontested scrums and the appearance of several with different socks does question the make up of their squad as invariably happens with rearranged matches. The hosts were in no mood to be lenient and subjected their opponents to pressure from the start. Ponty’s reaction was based mainly on dour defence with over the top aggression too often to the fore, and this led to a flurry of cards late on, including a deserved straight red near the end. Aber scored three tries in the first half, all coming from the front eight as the home pack made good use of the rolling maul to gain territory. Ywain ap Dylan was first off the mark as early as the fifth minute driving over from close range, and this was followed by a similar score from fellow flanker Adam Jones. Minutes from the break Nathan Best crashed over the line to a huge applause from the supporters. In between the home scoring Pontyates did manage to register their own with an interception to raise their spirits, increased with a penalty on the half time whistle. The advantage was increased early in the second period with Dylan Evans adding to his first half conversion with a penalty and any doubt concerning the final result was soon put to bed with a brace from Leighton Daniels, the lock proving to be a true find with the bonus of being the leading try scorer as the season nears its conclusion. With the forwards dominating, the Abaeraeron backs had a quiet evening but their turn came in the closing quarter, firstly Trystan Jones taking the glory following arguably the best move of the match and then Carl Williams, playing at full back weaving over the line to give the final scoreline a realistic look. With 2 away games to go, Alwyn Davies would have been pleased to have come through this rough encounter without injury and will undoubtedly wish to finish the campaign on a high.
