Aberaeron 16 Fishguard 0

A thoroughly professional performance saw the Aberaeron Seagulls comfortably dispose of the challenge of their Pembrokeshire counterparts. Having slipped up in recent weeks, there were a few questions to be answered on the day, but the style in which victory was achieved means there is still much to play for in the remaining few weeks of the season. A strong gale at Parc Drefach meant the contest would boil down to a tale of two halves, and with the home side having the advantage in the first period, it was imperative to get points on the board. Returning half back Dylan Evans duly obliged with a brace of well struck penalties in the first few minutes, but despite subjecting the visitors to concerted pressure the first try did not arrive until mid way through the half, wing Rhodri Thomas(pictured) being the benefactor following an overlap created by his fellow backs. A rare appearance from veteran Glyn Evans, replacing Deiniol Evans did not upset the rhythm with another returnee Eilir Evans complimenting Dan Downes in the front row. Supply from the lineout was surprisingly good under the conditions with Leighton Daniels again supreme, and the regular back row of Tudur Jenkins Elgan Jones and Ywain ap Dylan hardly took a step back throughout the afternoon. From one of the many rolling mauls Aberaeron were rewarded with a further score minutes from the break when outside half Evans broke through several tackles to put his side in the driving seat. Fishguard were expected to raise the tempo in the second period, but the home pack were in no mood to give up the advantage and spent the vast majority of the half camped in their opponents half only to be denied the elusive scores which would have brought a deserved bonus point. Not to be outdone the home backs also played their part with a strong defensive display in the face of aggressive and somewhat dubious attacks , Euryl Rees commanding young Owen Williams in the centre while full back Aled Davies was always a threat on the counter attack, giving varying options to wingers Thomas and Wyre Jones. The victory in the end was well received and despite another break this Saturday, the remaining fixtures provide an interesting finale to the season with fellow hopefuls Cefneithin next on the agenda.
