Furnace 16 Aberaeron 11

A second successive defeat means Aberaeron have a tough finale to retain interest in promotion. Injuries and unavailabilities proved to be a major disruption on the day and as against Bury Port, dominance at forward again failed to provide the spoils against a youthful Furnace side. Credit however must be given to home side who put up a brave defence and were always dangerous on the break which brought about both of their tries in the first half. Coupled with a penalty early on this gave them a 13- 8 lead at the break. Aber’s reply came from a try from number eight Tudur Jenkins following a series of rolling mauls near the home line, and interest was kept alive with a penalty on half time by wing Carl Williams, his first points for the club. Aberaeron would have been confident going into the second half with the wind at their backs, but the lack of cutting edge meant that they were always chasing the game. Injuries also played a part with Carl Downing suffering a rib injury and captain Dylan Williams hampered with concussion received early in the game. Aber’s tactics were therefore confined to forward domination and the front row of Dan Downes, Carwyn Davies and Deiniol Evans were again impressive both on loose and tight play. The margin was reduced midway through the half with another penalty from Williams but indiscretion at the restart immediately gave the advantage back to the home side which they were never to relinquish despite a late onslaught from the visitors. The defeat severely dents any promotion ambitions and the top priority for the coaching staff will be get the missing personnel back on duty and more importantly on the training ground to ensure that all the promise and hard work to date is not in vain.
