St Davids 5 Aberaeron 32

In arguably their best performance of the season, Aberaeron duly completed the double over St Davids.
Under perfect conditions, in total contrast to the previous week, the Seagulls displayed a ruthless streak to outplay the home side in every facet of play, and in scoring the four tries gained the all important bonus point. The Saints home form has been a minor revelation this term and a close game was expected, but they were subjected to pressure from the first whistle, finding it difficult to break the stranglehold and come away from their own half. The only surprise was the lack of tries in the first quarter with Aber’s supremacy only being rewarded with two penalties from Dylan Evans. It needed a flash of inspiration for the all important touch down and it duly came from a flowing move along the backline with Wyre Jones the benefactor after swift exchanges with Euryl Rees and Cerith Jones(pictured). The visiting forwards were dominant in the set pieces, Leighton Daniels again proving the find of the season whilst new recruit Elgan Jones in the backrow was the real grafter, releasing ap Dylan and Tudur Jenkins to take on the close exchanges which they did admirably. With Evans also controlling play from outside half the second try came minutes from the break , ap Dylan being on hand to touch down, with the resulting conversions giving a comfortable cushion at halfway.
The Saints did show more enterprise in the second half with the wind at their backs but it took a lapse of concentration to hand them their only score. This was however a short respite as the visitors quickly regained the initiative with the front row of Downes, Deiniol Evans and Carwyn Davies getting in on the act and unfortunate not to capitalise on good approach play. Further scores were inevitable and wing Rhodri Thomas was in the right position to extend the lead further. With the bonus point within reach it was a tense few minutes before Jones gave the final pass to co centre Rees for the all important score. Aber continued to press and it was only stern defence that prevented further touchdowns and the final whistle signalled a successful afternoon. The win provides the ideal fillip going into the international break with expectations high with the visit of leaders Burry Port next on the agenda in three weeks times.
