Aberaeron 29 St Clears 0

Despite this comfortable victory over St Clears the result was overshadowed by a serious injury to home flanker Adam Jones. The effervescent back rower had began the game in storming fashion giving the home side the edge against a poor Saints outfit. During the opening period Aberaeron had quickly brushed away the Xmas blues racing into a winning position within the first half hour. The home pack again dominated and a concerted drive early on resulted in a penalty try following a collapsed scrum to start the proceedings. Forced to ring changes in the front five Deiniol Evans at prop and Neil Snowdon at lock gave able support to regulars Carwyn Davies, Dan Downes and lineout jumper Leighton Daniels. The backs also showed more hunger than of late, and they were rewarded with a storming try by Dylan Evans quickly followed by another by Euryl Rees. The break in play due to Jones’s rib injury unfortunately resulted in a lull in the play and it was well into the second half when the bonus point was finally achieved. Aberaeron were forced to ring further changes in the back row with Tudur Jenkins and Ywain ap Dylan limping from the proceedings. Expansive play from the home backs was eventually to bear fruit with the benefactor being wing Cerith Jones who helped himself to a brace in quick succession. It could have been a hat trick but the visitors defence held firm under pressure. Chances also came the way of impressive young centre Owen Williams and left wing Wyre Jones which on another day would have borne fruit but it was the rediscovery of the renowned flair that gives captain Dylan Williams and his troops encouragement and optimism for the busy month ahead. Next up is an intriguing encounter away to Llandybie.
