In the battle of the Seagulls it was the Cardi version that secured the spoils to climb to the top of Division 5 West. In what is becoming a closely fought league, away results will very likely determine the final league placings and this win not only consolidates a high position but the manner it was achieved will give confidence for the games ahead. Contrary to their usual expansive style, Aberaeron had to resort to grinding out this result, which was indebted in no little measure to the stirling efforts of their front eight who refused to take a backward step throughout the afternoon. They also had to come from behind as early as the first minute when the home side were quicker off the mark with a try from lock Nathan Jenkins. As the half developed, pack leader Eilir Evans and his fellow forwards began to gain the initiative and Fishguard were forced to defend deeper and this resulted in indiscretion on more than one occasion. On the day the kicking duties were taken by Iestyn Thomas, and he was to produce a marvellous display which in the end secured the victory. His first two attempts in the first half sailed through the uprights and although the home side restored the lead briefly, Aber were ahead at half time with another Thomas sweet strike. The second half developed into a war of attrition with neither side gaining the advantage, the visitors content to keep the momentum amongst the front eight, whilst relying on the trusted Thomas left boot to keep the scoreline ticking over. Another hat trick of successful kicks, none easy was to complete a perfect afternoon for the full back and the hosts had little in reply in conceding their first home loss of the season. Never a spectacular, this performance will nevertheless give coach Alwyn Davies much pleasure and the manner it was achieved can only increase confidence for the weeks ahead.
