Aberaeron bounced back to winning ways with this hard fought victory against a plucky Furnace side. But for long periods the result could have gone either way before the visitors fire was finally doused. The biggest difference on the day was the home side’s supremacy up front with the rolling mauls being a major factor in gaining territory. As in the previous week, forward possession was in plentiful supply but a combination of unenforced errors and dogged defence kept the scoreline blank for most of the first half. It needed some inspiration to break the deadlock and it was the returning outside half Dylan Evans who gained the advantage intercepting a loose pass to cross and also adding the conversion. As the half progressed so did the visitors ambitions, and they got back into the game right on the break curtsy of some slack defence in the home ranks. The first score in the second half was crucial and after a simple penalty was missed by Furnace, Aber gained the ascendancy with a storming try from hooker Eilir Evans, after his fellow forwards again drove at the opposition. Dubious decisions by the referee prevented the lead being extended when firstly Llyr Jones was clean through and Rhodri Thomas was the second to suffer being in receipt of a suspect forward pass when crossing the line. Furnace were always dangerous on the break but the home defence stood firm for the remaining period and the only regret was the inability to gain the bonus point which could prove vital at season’s end. Nevertheless, this was an important success in what promises to be a close campaign and Aber will be relieved to have gained the advantage and the victory to maintain early season optimism.
