Llangwm 27 Aberaeron 22
This defeat can be attributed to a large extent to the lack of backbone and direction within the WRU. Consideration has to be given to available facilities , namely floodlights, when postponed games are arranged in early April and the lack of leadership and influence on this occasion can only be described as deplorable. To enforce a team to travel 90mins and expect to kick off at 7.00 is unacceptable and could under different circumstances have had a major influence on final league positions including promotion. As it is, the result may not be that crucial come season’s end, but it does give a harsh lesson for any future issues and serious consideration will be given in future if similar issues arise. Aberaeron arrived 10 mins from ko time and were forced to take the field with 13 players, with the first quarter played with uncontested scrums, resembling more like a circus than a keenly contested rugby match, and it was of little surprise that the home side, with a vociferous backing, took advantage gaining 3 tries in the opening quarter. It took the visitors half an hour to gain a footing and from that point forward they dictated with quality play, Llangwm relying totally and unfortunately on illegal and bullyish tactics to gain the support of the home contingent. With a full compliment, and another rearranged Seagulls backline, it became a different story as the bulky home side’s defence was continuously breached with silky skills, forwards and backs combining efficiently. Unfortunately on more than one occasion the referee was guilty of missing obvious indiscretion, which again could have influenced the final result, but credit to the visitors they did their utmost to overhaul the early setback and victory would have been thoroughly deserved under the circumstances. Early in the second period Aber were unfortunate not to score as influential No 8 Tudur Jenkins and then winger Rhodri Thomas threatened the line, but the first score soon came curtsey of the backline, Aled Davies beating the home defence to gain some footing . Such was the cutting edge of Davies, outside half Dylan Evans, and new combination Iestyn Thomas and Owen Williams, possession was essential and it provided further scores for the centres to bring the visitors within range. It was however a little too late and despite a late penalty Aber were unable to overhaul the deficit, and in the end suffered a second defeat on the trot. Such is the fine margin between success and failure that WRU consideration must be given to rearranged matches, in particular paying due respect to clubs who have made the effort to provide adequate facilities, but not receiving deserved recognition and possibly restricting progress and future development.
