Aberaeron 25 Llangwm 7

Despite having to contend with uncontested scrums, Aberaeron ran out comfortable winners against their Pembrokeshire opponents. Llangwm, were in third position in the league before kick off and it was a surprise that they were unable to call on a front row from the start. The home side’s forte in recent weeks has been the control of the front five in the set pieces, but to their credit they adapted well in the absence of the scrums and were able to give the backline a majority share of possession. Playing with the wind in the first half, the Seagulls opened up a fifteen point advantage, and in the process crossed their opponents line on two occasions. The first try came after a strong run from Tudur Jenkins, the centre crashing over the line for his first points of the season. This was followed with a seventh try of the season for wing Rhodri Thomas after all the home backline were involved in a fluent move. Coupled with a successful penalty and conversion from Euryl Rees the scoreline left Llangwm with a stern challenge in the second period.
With the wind advantage the visitors soon made inroads in the opening period of the second half, crossing the home line in the opening minutes to reduce the advantage. This however proved to be a false dawn as the home eight despite the absence of influential lock Rob Jenkins claimed majority possession in the lineouts mainly through number eight Neil Snowdon, and his fellow back row partners Ywain ap Dylan and man of the match Bob Londis ensured that the visitors were always on the back foot. After another successful Rees penalty there followed a contender for try of the season as the visitors defence was carved open with the ball passing through numerous pairs of hands for Rees to take the final pass to crown a good afternoon’s work.
This win extends the revival to four successes on the trot, and after the dismal start to the campaign, the Parc Drefach contingent can look forward with renewed hope to the new year with everything to play for in the second half of the season.
