The long awaited first success on home soil finally arrived against Fishguard in arguable the Seagulls best performance of the season. A few positional changes in the starting line up raised eyebrows before the kickoff but this proved to be a master plan by coach Alwyn Davies as the home side controlled the game from start to finish. The game was virtually over as a contest by half way as Aber had opened up a 22 point advantage, with the visitors bereft of any real cutting edge behind the scrum. Aber were duly rewarded for their early pressure with a try mid way through the half, the benefactor being Bob Londis after a storming break from fellow flanker Ywain ap Dylan. Despite being on the retreat in the scrums, Aber never really lost ground, largely due to Neil Snowden’s driving presence at number eight, and this gave the home backs a good platform to create opportunities. Good possession was also supplied from the lineouts where Robert Jenkins was a tower of strength and this resulted in two quick tries from Rhodri Thomas to put Aber in the comfort zone before the break. Not to be outdone another try right on the whistle at the break from fellow winger Aled Davies gave a the visitors a mountain to climb as they faced the second half with the wind in their favour. The elements as it turned out proved of little advantage as Aber continued to dominate but the visitors were given a glimmer of hope as they reduced the deficit with a converted try after half an hour. The only disappointment for the home contingent was Aber’s inability to convert possession into points in the second period and they had to wait until the final minutes to increase the margin, when outside half Huw Williams danced through the defence from distance to record his seventh try in seven matches this campaign. At the end there was considerable relief that the home hoodoo had finally been broken and maybe this success will give the perfect platform to really kickstart the season in earnest.
