Aberaeron 15 Fishguard 6 Despite the narrow scoreline, there was only likely to be one winner in the battle of the Seagulls. The Ceredigion version, fresh from some emphatic successes of late were thoroughly deserving of the win, and with a little more control and less indiscretion there could have been the addition of the all important bonus point. The Fishguard game is very much forward orientated but the Aberaeron front eight is now becoming much vaunted and really controlled the game from the start. This was highlighted very early in the game with consecutive strikes against the head, with man of the match Owen Wozencraft, belying his stature, giving his opponent a torrid time, aided admirably by impressive hooker Gareth Flynn and stalwart Dan Downes. For long periods in the first period the hosts were encamped in the visitors territory, with only last gasp defence preventing the elusive scores. As it was they had to be content with a brace of penalties from full back Iestyn Thomas, and Fishguard had the unlikely bonus of a penalty of their own as the game entered the second half. To the relief of the home contingent the real advantage was created in the opening minutes of the second period with a try as spectacular as you could witness in many a term. A scrum on the half way line was controlled perfectly to release Ywain ap Dylan on one of his now familiar marauding charges. Unlikely as it seemed, with the defence well prepared the number eight took complete control of the football, leaving both defenders and co players in his wake to gallop under the posts for a try well worth the admission fee on its own. The flash of brilliance proved to be a real spur for the home side but they were denied any real further changes with their own continuous indiscretion having an important bearing on the proceedings which coach Alwyn Davies will be keen to remedy for the final games. The final scoring was an exchange of penalties between Thomas and opposite number Huw Evans, the latter passing up the opportunity of an unlikely bonus point at the final whistle, and there was widespread applause when the referee blew for the final whistle. Much of the glory will go to the front eight but there were indeed impressive performances from the backline, the elusive Llyr Davies at fly half ably supported by the combatitive centre pairing of Tom Taylor and Owen Williams who really gave their opponents a torrid afternoon. So the hopes of success remain alive but it is now very much the case of taking one game at a time, New Dock Stars being the next visitors to Parc Drefach on Saturday.
