Aberaeron 38 Pontyates 0

Despite the emphatic scoreline, there was sense of disappointment at the final whistle as Aberaeron failed to reproduce the flair and form which had brought a record success at Pontyates earlier in the season. Over eagerness by the home side coupled with dogged defence from the visitors resulted in a fractured affair which left the considerable support very much frustrated, but also content with the all important bonus point win which keeps the pressure on the front runners in Division 5. Again missing several key personnel Aberaeron were never in danger of being on the end of a shock result, with Pontyates rarely providing any real attacking threat and content to keep the scoreline to the minimum. The game as a contest was over by half time as the bonus point had been achieved with four tries. Returning centre Bleddyn Henson was first off the mark cleverly out witting the defence to cross under the posts, Gareth Flynn duly adding the conversion. Hooker Flynn then really took the game by the scruff of the neck, his strength especially from close range resulting in a hat trick of tries by the half way mark with an additional conversion to add to his tally. The home forwards again dominated proceedings, Leighton Daniel reigning supreme in the lineout whilst Ywain ap Dylan is starting to enjoy himself in the unaccustomed role at number eight. There was also the opportunity of bringing on two replacement props, Owain Wozencroft and Deiniol Evans , a somewhat of a luxury these days, with no adverse effect on the domination.
Expectation of the floodgates opening in the second period were therefore initially promising as wing Ollie Sawyer was in the right position to finish off a flowing move for arguably the best try of the afternoon to give Aled Sweeney the opportunity of adding his name to the scoresheet with the conversion . Unfortunately complacency from thereon in resulted in the final pass going to ground and Aberaeron eventually had to settle for an additional solitary score minutes from full time, when Henson completed his brace for the afternoon to allow Flynn the final word with a straightforward conversion for a personal tally of twenty one points duly earning the man of the match award. After the previous week’s disappointment the return to winning ways is very welcome and more of the same will be required with a difficult encounter at St Davids on Saturday likely to provide a real test of character and commitment.
