Pontyates 8 Aberaeron 83
Despite a record breaking performance, Aberaeron will be left to reflect on a somewhat fractured performance and despite running in 13 tries, several other opportunities fell by the wayside. Pontyates are having a really torrid time this time round, with confidence at a low ebb, relying on an ageing squad who have obviously seen better days . It was one way traffic from the first kick, as the visitors put the hosts to the sword with points keeping pace with minutes on the clock. Aberaeron monopolised possession, with Dan Downes, Gareth Flynn and Carwyn Davies in the front row constantly causing grief to their counterparts and reflected in several interruptions to play with pressure the telling factor. The lineout was also one way traffic as captain Tudur Jenkins ,Leighton Daniel, and Alistair Severs dominated proceedings but as often happens such dominance can lead to complacency and this was a factor in the final score not crossing the three figure mark. For the record, the home line had been breached on five occasions before the break, with a sole reply giving some consolation, and desperate weariness in the second period resulted in the floodgates really opening with a further eight scores. The main benefactor was flanker Dafydd Williams, being constantly in the right place to take final passes, with a hattrick due reward for a fine performance. Not far behind was wing Gethin Morgan with a brace, but on another day could have doubled his try count. One could only feel sorry for fellow wing Owen Rhys, who was deprived of possession virtually throughout the afternoon. The remaining scores were spread evenly amongst the forwards and backs, the former contingent gaining points through Aled Sweeney, Bleddyn Henson, Dylan Evans, Ollie Sawyer and Dylan Williams whilst Flynn and Jenkins gained the honours for the forward brigade. The final whistle did bring a sense of relief, as one could only feel a little sorry for the weary home troops, who are looking to be in for a desperate season with survival the main objective. Aberaeron on the other hand extend their unbeaten run and with St Davids due at Parc Drefach on Saturday, it will be a case of more of the same with far tougher encounters on the horizon.
