Bynea 3 Aberaeron 39

Expectation and ambition remain at the top of the agenda for any worthwhile coach at the start of the rugby season, and for Aberaeron RFC Alwyn Davies is no different. After several seasons of under achievement that is Aberaeron Rugby Club, there is a belief that this season could finally bear fruit and elevation to a higher lever. This success arguably against lower opposition will give a huge boost for confidence and the growing maturity of the squad will be a major factor for the tough encounters ahead. Bynea, the first hurdle, have really struggled for any form of success in recent times and this year beckons no different as the visitors dominated every facet of play from the first whistle. Confidence amongst the forwards and backline was evident from the start and it was really a matter of the final margin of victory ,with the Seagulls never really put under threat. The fact that Bynea were forced to resort to uncontested scrums was paramount in restricting the margin of victory as the Aberaeron front eight provided a perfect platform in tight and loose play. The visitors were really in the driving seat from the first kick, with scrum half Carl Williams the first to benefit, crossing in the corner after creation of the overlap, Dylan Evans successful with the conversion from the touchline. Aberaeron were giving debuts to three personnel, and it was down to the first, Owen Rhys on the wing to make an impact, capitalising on exerted pressure for a brace of tries to really put his side in the comfort zone. The second debutant Gareth Flynn at hooker was prominent throughout and he was rewarded for his effervescent display with a brace of his own to douse any form of ambition from the home side. Another period of pressure gave winger Rhys his hattrick and there was even the luxury of being able to replace the front row, unknown in recent past, as the game was won with the replacement prop Carwyn Davies putting the final nail in the home coffin after another period of exerted pressure. The victory in itself was never really in doubt but the manner in which it was achieved will give a huge boost for the entire squad . No doubt there will be tougher games ahead but the confidence gained from this game will undoubtedly have a bearing in the weeks to come.
